Wednesday 3rd June – bike ride ***** Roquefort des Corbieres to Port La Nouvelle and everywhere inbetween! Sunny and very hot. 30 miles – top speed 30 mph

Lovely morning up on the cliff tops above Roquefort des Corbieres. Beautiful sunny day and lots of birds flitting around, serins, swallows, Martins and swifts mainly. We decided to bike to the Sigean etang and see if they did put permanent boulders in our sheltered spot or if it was just for the bank holiday weekend. We set off past the solar farm and turbines - this must be the most eco friendly and naturally powered village! We found a track alongside a vineyard which meant we didn’t need to go on the main road but we took a wrong fork, following a footpath sign and ended up heading into the rocky hills! Retraced our route and turned the other way and found an amazing track which snaked its way through vineyards and woods to come out on the Lidl roundabout in Sigean!! What a result considering we hadn’t got a clue where we would end up and couldn’t swear that it would even be in Sigean!! We carried on down to Port Mahon arriving just as a group of teenage school kids were setting out on their watersports afternoon. There were a lot of them and they were stand up paddle boarding, windsurfing, dinghy sailing, mountain biking and canoeing over to the island Mag and I canoed round in our inflatable canoe a few years ago. Yet again we had to say that school was never like that for us!! We carried on to our favourite spot and….. there are no boulders in sight so maybe we could stay there again on a windy day in the future. Followed the footpath we walked last week to La Cabane and carried on until we were behind the tiny hamlet before stopping at the water’s edge to eat our lunch, have a rest and a read. Back on the bikes we found the road out of La Cabane and had to go on the main road towards Port La Nouvelle. Once we reached the eyesore that is the cement works (visible from everywhere around here!) we got onto a cycle path and biked into Port La Nouvelle along the docks where huge fishing boats were coming in followed by swarms of seagulls eating the fresh guts being thrown overboard!! Then onto the pier and to the lighthouse where we saw an old guy catch a two foot long bass – poor old thing, I couldn’t watch them trying to get the hook out of its mouth:( Along the prom and onto the beach where one of the big white elephant campers had dug itself well and truly into the sand! We peddled towards the jetty where we windsurf but stopped short (on the naturist beach) to have another rest, eat very warm peaches from our packed lunch and rest. I went in the sea again!! Final push along the main road to La Palme, up through the town, which is a very steep hill and up onto the main dual carriageway for a short way. Had to cross over to get to the Roquefort turn off but managed to pick a time when there was no traffic which was amazing as there seems to be a lorry a second along there!! Safely over to the right side of the dual carriageway and under the motorway bridge and we were on the road into Roquefort village. Then the very last bit is really really steep up onto the cliffs and back to the van! 30 miles and peddling for 3 hours 50 minutes. We were away from the van for 6 hours and it really was a top day:) We had picked up some bread (and had a cheeky icepop too) at a small shop in La Palme so we had an easy tea of bread, cheese and our new discovery – whole roasted red peppers in sweet vinegar! Amazing:) Also ate the cakes we bought yesterday with a well earned cuppa. Another amazing sunset tonight just as some people from the village (the only people we have seen up here) walked past with some children on a horse and a donkey on a rope:) We love it here.
